Walter wants...

In A Raisin in the Sun, each character has a plan for the $10,000 insurance check. Whose desire or dream do you feel will best benefit the family?

I think Walter's desire will best benefit the family. He wants to invest into a liquor store, which could potentially make them a lot of money. There is a risk to this, but it could get them out of poverty.

I think that mama's plan for the money will benefit the family the greatest. Walter's dream of a liquor store could potentially make a lot of money, but there is a risk that it could be bust and $10,000 go to waste. Mama believes that they should buy a house, which has many benefits. The family will have a much more room to live in, a yard for Travis, an area to garden for Mama, Travis will finally have is own room, room for the new baby, and many future generations can live in the house. Mama wanted to use the leftover money to put Bennie through medical school. Bennie being a doctor will have a decent salary, which she could contribute to the family with, and they would not need to pay to see a doctor anymore. Overall, Mama's plan with give the family better housing and potentially add more income for the family.

Mama's idea for the money might give them a house, but without the $10,000, they would still be in poverty. Walter's plan to invest in another scheme is potentially the best plan, but it has a greater chance of failing than Beneatha's, who plans to go to medical school to become a doctor and make enough money to provide for the family. All in all, with chances and potential losses weighed, Beneatha's idea for the money seems most realistic and helpful.

I agree with Cupid. Mama's idea for the money will benefit the family the greatest. They will finally get to own a larger home with more property and space. Each person would fit comforatably in their room. Ruth would probably like a larger space for the new baby as well as a bigger kitchen. Travis, most likely, would enjoy a larger yard, and having his own room. Bennie would be able to share a room with Mama. It would also give her her own space to study for medical school.

I think Mama chose to use the money for the new house for a few reasons. First, Walter's liquior store could have possibly brought-in a larger increase of money for the family, but it also could have ended up costing the family even more money (if his plan were to back-fire). Money for Bennie's college expenses would have been good, but perhaps Mama believed that Bennie changed her mind too often. Bennie liked to be/feel cultured, and perform in many activities, but as soon as she switched activities she forgot the last one.

Mama's plan for the money was the best. She gave her family not only a new house, but a new home.

I agree with narcissus. I think that the idea of a liquor store is a good idea. Through doing this, they will be able to get enough money to eventually buy a house. Although, like cupid said, there could be a bust, with the $10,000 dollars he might be able to get a gun or some other form of protection. So, if they went along with Walter's desires, they would be able to get a house which might make them all happier because they wouldn't be in such tight quarters. So, I think Walter's idea is the best.

Personally, I believe they should buy 10,000 lottery tickets. And then convert their winnings to gold.

Of all of the mortal plans laid out by the characters, Benetha's plan seems the best, however. She wants to put herself to medical school because doctors make a lot of money. While Walter's plan for investment would made more money if it paid off, Benetha's plan has a greater chance of working, and Mama's plan does not make any money.

I think that Benetha's plan for the money will benefit the Youngers the most. This is because she wants to be a doctor and spend the $10,000 on medical school. Even though it will take a long time to earn the money back, I think it would help the family in the long run. Yes, people will always want to buy liquor but people will always want their family to be healthy and therefore they would need a doctor. Futher more, Mama's idea about the house will help the family get into a better living environment, but after Benetha goes to medical school and becomes a doctor, she can buy the family an even better house with the money she earned being a doctor.

Overall, Benetha's plan to spend the money on medical school will turn out to be the best choice in the longrun for her family.

I believe that Walter's plan for the money will have the best outcome in the long run. Like it said in the book, people are always drinking. A liquor store could bring in a lot of money for the family, once it gets started. There is the chance that the store might be a bust, but I think it is the family's best choice.

I believe mama and Bennie both have optimistic ideas for the ten thousand dollars, however Wlater's idea is most realistic. If he is able to open a bar with the help of his friend, Willy Harris, the bar would hopefully bring in a sufficient income for the family to have more in their life than they do now. Then, if they made enough money from the bar, they could work on fufilling their other dreams. Bennie would be able to attend medical school and become a doctor, Mama would be able to buy her new house for everyone to live in, and there would be money for Travis and the new baby's future.

In my opinion, Beneatha's idea of how to spend the money is the best. Her going to medical school will provide money for the family as well as providing them with medical assistance at any time. Beneatha becoming a doctor has a better chance of surviving than Walter's business plan. Mama supports Beneatha's future and whatever Mama wants, she will do because it is her money.

I, along with many others, support Mama in her decision of what to do with the $10,000. She is putting some aside for Beneatha for medical school, and using the rest to buy a proper home for the family. I think this is a wise choice because if Beneatha fulfills her dreams of becoming a doctor, it will be a huge source of income for the family. However, this plan would take a long time to eventually raise a profit. By setting aside only a portion for this purpose, Mama protects herself from losing all of it.

Also, the family is absolutely bursting in the apartment which currently houses them. They need a house or at least a larger apartment to fit all five of them comfortably.

I respect Mama for rejecting Walter's offer to invest in a liquor store. While it could make a great deal of money for the struggling family, if business does not prosper they will be far worse off than before. It is a huge risk to make, and with her family's delicate financial situation, I admire Mama for standing firm to her beliefs.

I think that that Walter's choice of dealing with the money is the best benefit for the family. I believe that if the 10,000 dollars is invested in starting Walter's new job it will bring the beginning to even more money. People do drink a lot and buy from liquor stores. By investing in one, this would provide the family with more options such as buying a new home, sending Beneatha to medical school, and fulfilling all the families' desires.Although, the liquor store may not hit successfully, it is still worth a try. This could be the way to get the family out of poverty as well as allow for all their dreams to come true.

Walter's plan is the best. If he made enough money he could help everyone very easily. Yes it is a gamble, but the odds of it paying off are in his favor and the payoff more than outways the risk. Besides, the other plans aren't that great. Mama means well, but it would be a quick purchase, not an investment. Ruth doesn't have much of a plan she just wants a better life. Bennie's plan is selfish. She changes her interests too often, and the only thing she might stick with is becoming a physician. Even the job with a job as a physician, this radical, anti-assimilation, feminist wouldn't be able to support her whole family. Walter's liquor store just might be able to do that.

Chris Rodriguez said...

I agree with Narcissus' answer because Walter will not only benefit the family if he is successful but he won't have to waste money on buying alcoholic beverages for himself and his friends. Also if he fails he can sell the business he buys for mroe money or for the exact amount which won't him or the family.

The best course of action lies along what cupid originally said, and hesphestus. Mama's plan of getting a house for the family is great. They need more room as a whole, and with more room, they could each gain a mesure more personal space, which they have clearly been lacking. They do not need to put all the money towards that goal. They can put 5 or 6 thousand down for the house, and split up the remaining money for both the liqor store and medical school. This may cause the later two dreams to fail, but it is a chance worth taking. If Benetha is sucessful in medical school she would quickly be able to pay of her loans that she took out to make up the difference, and in the following years, help pay of the house, and if the family then deems it a prudent investment they can put down money for the bar. If the later two dreams fail though, at least the family will have started payments on a house, and over times, perhpas slowly, but surely they will pay off all the money they owe.

In my opinion, Walter's plan to open a liquor store will best benefit his family. Mama's and Ruth's idea of a nice home, with a yard, is a good plan, but how will they continue to afford the house after they spend the insurance money? Also, in the long run, investing in a liquor store will make enough money to put food on the table, and hopefully make extra money so that maybe one day they can buy a nice home they can afford. Although Mama believes a liquor store is not an honest living, and does not want her son to go into that buisness, it will help the family get out of poverty.

Like Cupid (and the others who wrote about Cupid), I agree that Mama's plan with the money will help the family the most. Walter's plan of investing into a liquor store goes against what Mama believes, and since it is her money, she doesn't want her son getting into that type of risky trouble. Her plan is to put Benetha through medical school and possibly buy a house. While Walkter's plan with the money would make his dreams come true, Mama wants to do what is best for the entire family.

I agree with walter. Using the money to invest in a liquor store will allow them to make even more money, and eventually buy themselves a house, like they always dreamed. Also, Walter would not have been so upset if they had invested in a liquor store instead of a house. That way, they would have some money to raise their new child with.

I agree with Cupid, Medusa, and everyone else who thinks that Mama's plan is best. Walter's choice to invest the money is incredibly risky, especially considering that the family does not have money to fail if the business does not succeed. Mama's plan will provide the family with a good home, which will always provide the comfort of shelter and security even in hard times. By using the extra money for Beneatha's medical school, the Younger family will be able to provide Beneatha with an education that will put her in a position to succeed and have a prestigious job that will earn her a salary unlike any other family member receives, which may be able to provide financial security in the future.

I might be a bit biased in my assessment, as my family tends to be mathematically and financially oriented rather than lingual, but...

Mama has the legitimate claim to the money.

Walter and Beneatha's dreams might be profitable in the short term, but let's not forget that Donald Trump's fortune was primarily made off of real estate. With educated investing, I think that Mama's plan would help with long-term wealth and in the interim provide a place for the family to live.

Everyone's plans could potentially yield considerable profit. But in the meantime, Mama's plan gives Travis a better childhood (if they can move to a distric with better schools), give Ruth and Beneatha more space in which to work, and keep everyone out of everyone else's plan. I think that domestic unrest can interfere with their work, and smoothing everyone's feathers would be good.

Also, it's Mama's money.

Not Walter's. Not Ruth's. Not Travis's. Not Beneatha's.

I feel that Mama's desired plan for $10,000 is the most beneficial to the family, as many others have said as well. Although Walter's dream for owning his own business and being in control of his family's economic state for sure, I still feel that investing all of the money is too risky. Also, Mama's plan to buy a house makes sense for everyone who would potentially live in the house. Travis would finally be able to have a yard to play in, mama will be able to work in a sufficient garden, and there will be room for Ruth's new infant. Also, Walter would have an opportunity to get a new job, in a new neighborhood.

I believe everyone has a very good points, but in the outrun – Beneatha will have the unsurpassed outcome. The cash should be split between Mama’s imaginings and Beneatha’s ambitions. Walter’s liquor store is not a bad idea but there are more odds for a risk than chances for wealth. His investment could hit bust and there $10,000 could be wasted and maybe even leave them off shoddier than where they started. Where as, Doctor’s make a hefty amount of income and if they get Beneatha through medical school and she does live her dreams of becoming a doctor it will benefit everyone. As well, the family would be able to save some wealth on health because Beneatha will be able to treat the family in the stead of having to recompense thousands of dollars for health insurance or doctors. Beneatha’s career will earn the safest and quickest money and maybe some time later, Walter can invest in a liquor store when the family is more financially stable.

The choice to buy a house on Mama’s part was smart and responsible. As if have mentioned before Beneatha’s education is an immense venture but they should split the insurance money, 50/50 between Mama’s house and Beneatha’s schooling. The family was cramped and unhappy. Everyone was on top of each other but with the new house there will be more cooling space and less anxiety between the inhabitants. As well as saving a life, since Ruth can now keep her baby. Beneatha’s doctor degree and the spacious house the lives of the Younger’s are much more founded for success.

I agree with everyone who thought that Walter's plan would be the best. ALthough many people said Mama's plan would be more beneficial, I don't agree. Having a new house would be nice at the time, but if Walter doesn't get another job, then he will eventually not be able to pay for the house (if he can hardly pay for the apartment as it is). Investing in a liquor store could potentially give the family more money, and when they save up enough money from the liqour store, then they could buy a house. This way they can get both things: a house and Walter's job, from just investing the money in the one store.

I think Mama's desire of how to spend the money will best benefit the family. If the Youngers buy a house with the 10,000 dollars, they will not only live in a bigger, cleaner, and more healthy environment, but there would be room for Ruth and Walter's baby instead of Ruth getting an abortion. Although Walter's plan for investing in a liquor store could eventually make money, it not only would take a while to get established and start to get customers, but there's a really good chance that the store would fail.

Atlas said...

Walter's plan for the $10,000 is the best. Although investing in a liquor store is risky, the family could profit most from that investment. Mama's idea of buying a house was good, but it wouldn't make them any money, and they would eventually run out. Beneatha's plan to go to medical school to become a doctor could make the family money eventually, but it would take far too long. Investing in the liquor store could make the most money fastest.

Diana said...

I agree with Apollo when he says that the best idea for the check would be Beneatha's plan, solely because Walter's idea for the check is far too risky to gamble with, and Mama's idea would benefit the family, but they would still be left in poverty. In the long term Beneatha going to medical school would earn more than enough money to buy a new house after an amount of time. And thought Mama does have the legal claim to the money as circe said, Beneatha would be able to provide much better for the family instead of a house in the long run.

I agree with many of the other comments, Mama's plan for the money is the most relistic. Walter wants to blow all 10,000 dollars off in one unrelistic, potentially problematic scheme, where he could very easilly lose it all. However, Mama is the true owner of the money and would break up the money wisely. As Cupid said, Mama and her family could invest in a new house and benefit each of them. The family suffers from such small private quaters, so a new and bigger home would result in a much happier family. In addition, a new more optimistic output on life would bloom. With each member of the household a little happier, better oppourtunities occur for everyone. The new home would also make for a better enviornment to raise Travis and no longer the need for Ruth to get an abortion. Mama's plan for the 10,000 dollars is byfar the best and benefits the entire Younger family and their generations to come.

While i do agree that Mama's plan for the money would best benefit the family in the short run, I do not feel any of the plans will actually solve the family's problems. Walter will never realize how important family is, and not money, while Mama already knows this. Mama is thinking how to spend the money to benefit her family, while Walter is more concerned with being rich. These clashes of priorities will be the achilles heal of the family.

Fate - Clotho said...

I agree with most of the comments so far that Mama's plan with the money would best benefit the family. Walter's plans for the liquor store are risky and unstable. Investment in it could pull the family into deeper debt possibly. I think Mama is right in giving some of the money to Beneatha for her medical school tuition. Beneatha is the future of the family and has a real possibility to make something of herself and change circumstances as a doctor. She is an inspiration for women and African Americans in her pursuit of becoming a doctor and it will surely bring her success if she studies and works hard. Also buying a new house is a great idea. Poor Travis sleeps on the couch in their current home, space is tight, and the family has to share one bathroom with their entire building. I think with Mama retiring she deserves a home and it will in general make the entire family happier and prideful. It's a sure thing unlike Walter's propsed business.

Ariadne said...

I beleive that Beneatha's plan for the money would benefit the family the most. By becoming educated at medical school to become a doctor, she is on the path of success. As a doctor, she will make a lot of money that she could use to help support her family. It would take time, and money would have to be spent so money could be earned, however, in the long run, Beneatha's plan is the most pratical and would benefit the family the most.

Zeus said...

I feel that Mama's dream will best benefit the family because she has the best outlook on the family in looking for a house. She is always concerned for the family just like the plant she wants to grow and flourish. Part of the $10,000 that she uses to buy the house is her way of doing what she feels is best for the family, watering the plant so to speak. The house will not only eventually be Travis's but will also serve as a bigger space for the family to grow in. The only risk that Mama is taking is moving into an all white neighboorhood where the last black family that lived there was killed. She feels that she is doing what is best for the family, and that is all that matters to her.
